A structure sensitive to vibrations due to vortex shedding
The Arc Majeur, a monumental 60 m high steel artwork, shows a high sensitivity to wind-induced vibrations (VIV). The initial design, based on the Eurocode, was complemented by wind tunnel tests.
Compared results: Eurocode vs wind tunnel
The results show that the Eurocode overestimates vibrations for high Scruton numbers, requiring more damping than actually necessary. Adding a 1,500 kg TMD (Tuned Mass Damper) is sufficient to achieve safe behavior.
Towards an optimization of damping devices
The tests indicate that 0.5% damping is sufficient, compared to 2.75% required by the standard. This result opens the way to optimizing constructive solutions.
Conclusion
The case of the Arc Majeur illustrates the complementarity between regulatory standards and experimental validation. A hybrid approach ensures safety, reliability, and design optimization for iconic structures.
